Chapter Eleven

Gabe stepped aside as Sarah scurried out the door, leaving him alone with Katrina. The welcome he received when he arrived at the meeting was unexpected, to say the least. Maybe Katrina really did feel bad about the way she’d treated him last week. It was time he found out so he could decide how to proceed with his plans.

“Let me help you.” He sauntered into the room and picked up a chair before folding it and setting it against the wall.

“Thank you. Sarah usually stays to help me clean up, but she had to run.” She offered him a small smile and continued moving the chairs.

“That was an interesting exercise you had us do. Our group leader in San Francisco never incorporated team building into our meetings. I guess he didn’t follow the rules.”

She rested a chair against the wall and bit her lip. It wasn’t a seductive gesture. She looked almost embarrassed in an adorable way, and Gabe’s stomach clenched as an unwelcome emotion expanded in his chest.

“I have a confession.” She lifted one shoulder. “Team building exercises aren’t required by law. They aren’t even suggested.”

“Then why do you do them?”

“It helps the demons learn to get along with others. I know they’ve all bargained for their freedom because they don’t want to be evil anymore, but we are all evil at our cores. Working together and having a little fun reminds us why we’re topside.”

“Evil at your core, yet intent on helping others.”

She raised a finger. “Lying to them to do it, though.”

He laughed. “You are an interesting character.”

She pursed her lips, drawing his attention to the way they resembled a bow. “Please don’t tell the others about this. I shouldn’t even have told you.”

“Why did you?” He folded another chair and rested it against the wall.

“I think I should apologize.”

“No need. I won’t say a word to the others, so you won’t have to apologize for lying.”

She picked up the last chair and leaned it on the stack against the wall. “I should apologize to you. I’m sorry for sabotaging your lecture and for being rude at the last meeting. It was no way for a recovering demon to treat one of her own.”

He shoved his hands into his pockets, a bit taken aback by her sincerity. He’d expected nothing more than a half-hearted “sorry.”

“This is the part where you say I’m forgiven.” She brushed her hair behind her shoulder before resting a hand on her hip.

“No worries. I rescheduled the event, and the turnout was even better.”

Her jaw clamped shut with an audible click.

Good going, dumbass. The way to win the woman’s heart is not by rubbing in your own success.

“I should apologize too.” He stepped toward her. “I never meant to steal your business. I didn’t even know your app was a thing until someone told me at the first lecture.”

She crossed her arms, obviously not buying his apology.

He continued, “If I’d known it was you running the service, I wouldn’t have suggested they cancel their accounts.
